Inderdaad, ik heb in de ssmtp.conf de volgende snippet:

# The place where the mail goes. The actual machine name is required no
# MX records are consulted. Commonly mailhosts are named mail.domain.com
mailhub=smtp.ziggo.nl

I've been using OpenWRT for my alix boards. Reading this nice howto, I wonder what could be the average boot time with gentoo? With OpenWRT, this is really fast (no more than a few seconds). Gentoo on my laptop is not that fast...

A few more notes that may be of use to someone else trying to do this:
1. If you do end up syncing the entire portage tree, make sure the filesystem on your CF card has enough inodes. By default, creating an ext3 fs with mke2fs won't give you enough and you'll begin to get error messages regarding not having enough drive space. "mke2fs -j -T small /dev/sdX" worked for me.
2. Grub .97 didn't really like booting to such a filesystem, using grub-install to install it to the boot sector instead of the grub command line seemed to fix this.

This was very helpful indeed, saved me much heartache and grief! Ended up installing the whole portage tree but the other hints were spot on.

I followed your guide and I'm very thankful :-)
One question tho: did you have any luck getting the LEDs and/or the button to work?

Hi there,
Unfortunately I'm making something wrong when installing gentoo on my alix. I'm using gentoo embedded with latest kernel and lilo.
I installed it with another Linux system. I'Ve put the CF card into a card reader and installed the gentoo system on it.
As the Card reader with the CF card appears in dev
as /sdc I configure Lilo.conf according the the three partitions (sdc1 boot, sdc2 swap, sdc3 root). But as the CF in the alix should appear as hda, a configure the fstab that way: hda1 boot, hda2 swap, hda3 root.
Basically, is this way correct? Because i got the following error:
VFS: Cannot open root device "823" or unknown-block(8,35)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions
...
0301 hda1
0302 had2
0303 hda3
Kernel panic - not synching: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,35)
----
thanks!
regards,
dd

I managed to get the NEC1701 working by deselecting the firmware EDID support (CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID). This also solves the headless operation. I had to do a make mrproper and reinjecting the .config (make oldconfig) to make it happen.
cheers,
Martijn
